Heavener Public Schools

     I’ve recently read the book, At the Edge of the Universe by Shaun David Hutchinson. This book talks about so many important social issues such as mental illness, confused sexuality, domestic violence and child abuse. The book is told from the perspective of the main character Oswald Pinkerton, aka Ozzie - who is the only one left with memories of his former boyfriend Tommy. The book follows Ozzie trying to figure out the mystery of his boyfriend, or more of why no one remembers him. His theory- the universe is shrinking. He is committed to finding Tommy at any cost. But when Ozzie meets someone new his attention is briefly occupied. The characters were so diverse in this book, they all were so independent and dealing with many problems. I've never been a huge sci-fi fan but this book completely changed my views. It was very sad at some points and very prospective changing at others. It was very poetic and beautifully written. After reading this I questioned everything, it makes think about so many different things and realites. This is Shaun Hutchinson's 6th independent book. A majority of hi work is science fiction and about aliens. I would highly recommend this book, it was so amazing and heart-felt. A quote from this book (one of my personal favorites) - “It's impossible to let go of the people we love. Pieces of them remain embedded inside of us like shrapnel. Every breath causes those fragments to burrow through our muscles, nearer to our hearts. And we think the pain will kill us, but it won't. Eventually, scar tissue forms around those twisted splinters like cocoons. They remain part of us, but slowly hurt less. At least, I hoped they would.”
