Veteran Teacher Reflects on Times at Heavener

Mrs. Kay Lynn Huddleston is a 2nd grade teacher at Heavener Elementary. She has taught here at Heavener since 1995.

Q: What is your first memory of school?

Mrs. Huddleston: My first memory for school was kindergarten when we had to learn how to tie our shoes. There was a big old shoe and to graduate we had to tie that shoe. I also remember being in parades, and every class had a float that they worked on for weeks.

Q: What inspired you to teach the young ones?

Mrs. Huddleston: I love teaching them because they are excited about learning. The children are very respectful of their teacher and they love what they are doing.

Q: How was college for you?

Mrs. Huddleston: College was a different time for me, because all of my friends had got married in high school. So, college was not as much fun as I would’ve liked it to be, but it was just a time to get the degree.

Q: What makes a good day at school?

Mrs. Huddleston: A good day a school is when my students are listening to me and we are having fun while we are learning.

Q: What would be your dream vacation?

Mrs. Huddleston: Well, every year I go to Florida in the summer, but my dream vacation would be to go to Ireland to tour the beautiful countryside.

Q: Are there any embarrassing teaching moments you're willing to share?

Mrs. Huddleston: We were at the reading table in first grade and I have a bathroom in my classroom so, we were reading a story and one of the students was having a hard time trying to say a word and I kept hearing a voice saying the word, it turns out that there was a child in the bathroom down on their hands and knees shouting out the word in the story.

Q:Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?

Mrs. Huddleston: Be the best that you can be, I was always taught that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I don’t always follow it, but it is what I was taught.
